THE HISTORY

Nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires, Litchfield is a quintessential New England town, rich in history and surrounded by nature’s beauty. Originally named “Bantam” by the native population, it was renamed Litchfield after the 1720s and developed for farming, mills, and education. BANTAM LAKE

Bantam Lake is the largest natural lake in Connecticut, covering 947 acres in the towns of Morris and Litchfield. Much of the land at the northern end of the lake, including the peninsula of Marsh Point, is protected by the White Memorial Foundation and home to a wide array of bird species.

Tapping Reeve (1744-1823), an American jurist and founder of the Litchfield Law School. The house and law school are open to visitors April to November. “If you want an experience that alters your perception of what a museum is like, humanizes the past, engages every member of your family, contributes to historical debate on an intelligent level, and offers a critical look at America’s early republic, come to Litchfield.” – Prof. Katherine Hermes, Central Connecticut State University.

Ride through the rolling hills on horseback with Lee’s Riding Stable in Litchfield. Well-mannered trail horses and experienced trail guides will make sure your ride is one to remember. SKIING AT MOHAWK MOUNTAIN

Mohawk State Forest and Mohawk Mountain Ski Area have a network of slopes and trails for cross country, downhill skiing, and snowshoeing with over 70 years of family fun created by the Skiing Hall of Famer, Walk Schoenknecht.  Access to the state park is obtained off of Rt. 4 in Cornwall and the Ski Area Parking is at 46 Great Hollow Rd, Cornwall, CT 06753.

WHERE TO SWIM IN THE AREA

There are plenty of places to swim near The Litchfield Inn, including Sandy Beach and Litchfield Town Beach on Bantam Lake, both offering various amenities and charging parking fees. Mt. Tom State Park features a swimming beach, hiking trails, and a scenic tower, while Lake Waramaug State Park provides camping and watercraft rentals.
