THE HISTORY

Nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires, Litchfield is a quintessential New England town, rich in history and surrounded by nature’s beauty. Originally named “Bantam” by the native population, it was renamed Litchfield after the 1720s and developed for farming, mills, and education. Its well-preserved architecture and vibrant cultural scene make it a notable example of 18th-century town design. TOWN GREEN

The historic park is located in the center of Litchfield and is lined with trees, memorials, shops, restaurants, and many other historic buildings.

BANTAM LAKE

Bantam Lake is the largest natural lake in Connecticut, covering 947 acres in the towns of Morris and Litchfield. Much of the land at the northern end of the lake, including the peninsula of Marsh Point, is protected by the White Memorial Foundation and home to a wide array of bird species.

LAKE WARMAUG

Lake Waramaug is a 656-acre lake occupying parts of the towns of Kent, Warren and Washington in Litchfield County, Connecticut.  When vivid fall foliage is mirrored in the unrippled lake surface, the park becomes a mecca for sightseers and photographers.

CORNWALL COVERED BRIDGE

One of the last covered bridges in Connecticut, this iconic landmark spans 172 feet long over the Houstantic River. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designed by Ithiel Town, it has been in continuous service since 1864.

HOLLISTER HOUSE GARDEN

The Hollister Homestead is a historic house at 300 Nettleton Hollow Road in Washington, Connecticut. Built about 1770, it is a prominent local example of Georgian architecture. The property is also the site of the Hollister House Garden, an English garden begun in 1979 and open to the public.

TAPPING REEVE

Tapping Reeve (1744-1823), an American jurist and founder of the Litchfield Law School. The house and law school are open to visitors April to November. “If you want an experience that alters your perception of what a museum is like, humanizes the past, engages every member of your family, contributes to historical debate on an intelligent level, and offers a critical look at America’s early republic, come to Litchfield.” – Prof. Katherine Hermes, Central Connecticut State University.

THE LITCHFIELD HISTORY MUSEUM

The Litchfield History Museum exhibits the evolution of the town of Litchfield, CT from its settlement in 1719 to today. Through changing exhibits, artifacts and archives, as well as hands-on areas, visitors can explore the diverse history of the town. Litchfield was a bustling commercial, political, and educational center and is a case study for the evolution of New England towns following the Revolutionary War. Open mid-April through November, admission is free.

HORSEBACK RIDING

Ride through the rolling hills on horseback with Lee’s Riding Stable in Litchfield. Well-mannered trail horses and experienced trail guides will make sure your ride is one to remember. Ages 7 and up are welcome on the trail from 9am – 5pm, 7 days a week. For the younger horse lovers, pony rides are offered in our indoor and outdoor rings.

SKIING AT MOHAWK MOUNTAIN

Mohawk State Forest and Mohawk Mountain Ski Area have a network of slopes and trails for cross country, downhill skiing, and snowshoeing with over 70 years of family fun created by the Skiing Hall of Famer, Walk Schoenknecht.  Access to the state park is obtained off of Rt. 4 in Cornwall and the Ski Area Parking is at 46 Great Hollow Rd, Cornwall, CT 06753.

WHERE TO SWIM IN THE AREA

There are plenty of places to swim near The Litchfield Inn, including Sandy Beach and Litchfield Town Beach on Bantam Lake, both offering various amenities and charging parking fees. Mt. Tom State Park features a swimming beach, hiking trails, and a scenic tower, while Lake Waramaug State Park provides camping and watercraft rentals. Burr Pond State Park, located on historic grounds, offers swimming, boating, and hiking. Each location includes details on amenities, fees, and accessibility.
